There is a concern that the nuisance
ordinance that is being considered will require changes in the township junkyard
ordinance, enacted in 1965. The junkyard ordinance from Hereford township,
Berks County could be adapted for Choconut.
Supervisor Dovin has asked the commission to consider ordinances that regulate
aspects of gas drilling, and has provided sample ordinance.
The aerial picture below of the area north of Stanley Lake shows one of many blue stone mines in Choconut. A DEP permit is required for a such a mine, but some mines operate illegally without one. The permit requires that the site be restored when mining has ended. The permit also requires that information about the mine be posted at an entry road. If you are aware of a mine that is not permitted, please contact DEP or one of the supervisors, to ensure that the area is restored when mining has ended.
